Is your deodorant harming you and the planet?

There is an overwhelming amount of choice when it come buying your deodorant. The deodorant you buy will have an impact on the world around you. There are some ingredients you may want to avoid because research has shown concerns for environmental, body and skin health...

  1. Aluminium compounds. Avoid aluminium compounds such as aluminium chloralhydrate or aluminium zirconium. They block sweat glands and prevent your body's natural perspiration.
  2. Parabens such as methylparaben and propylparaben are preservatives commonly used in personal care products. There are concerns that they interfere with the body’s hormonal systems and balances.
  3. Synthetic fragrances can be made up of hundreds or thousands of chemicals and can be a source of skin irritation for some people. If this is the case opt for fragrance free or naturally scented deodorant.
  4. Phthalates are a chemical compounds that are used as a binding agent or solvent in personal care products. They are believed to be endocrine disruptors and interfere with the hormonal balance.
  5. Butane and Isobutane, found in aerosols, are derived from petroleum. They propel the deodorant onto the skin. They are volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can irritate eyes, and airways.

An easy way to assess whether the ingredients in your deodorant are harming you is to check them on apps such as Think Dirty. Scan the bar code and the app will provide you with a list of ingredients rated for their safety.

The environmental impact of deodorants are three-fold. Firstly there is the packaging waste; deodorant is usually packaged in hard to recycle single use plastic so will often in up in landfill. The production of plastic is an energy intensive process. The chemical ingredients in commercial deodorant have a negative effect on the environment as they enter water systems through wastewater. The build up of preservatives causes water pollution and can be harmful to aquatic life. Every product we use has a carbon footprint. Consider the energy used in the production, transportation and disposal of products; it all contributes to greenhouse gas emissions and climate change.

So what’s the alternative?

An alternative to commercial deodorant is natural deodorant that works with nature to keep your armpits healthy and odour free! Ingredients that are sourced ethically from reputable suppliers and are fairly traded to ensure producers are not exploited. Natural deodorant is also usually not tested on animals. It is perfectly possible to manufacture deodorant that is free from single use plastic, for example, refillable or like Kutis, supplied in 100% recyclable cardboard packaging. Research your supplier of deodorant to ensure their business practices align with your values. Apps such as Think Dirty and the Ethical Consumer website are great for this.

I hope this blog helps you to make a more informed choice the next time you shop for deodorant? Ensure your deodorant cares for both your skin and the planet.
